USA vs IND Stop Clock Rule: To run the game of cricket smoothly, many rules have been made by the ICC, one of which is the stop clock. This rule has not been discussed much till now, but it was used in the 25th match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 and suddenly the discussion of this rule started. Due to the stop clock rule, the USA team had to face a penalty of 5 runs against India due to their mistake, which was very important at that time in the match.
Actually, Jasdeep Singh came to bowl the 16th over of India's innings but it took more than 60 seconds for the previous over to end and this over to start and due to this a penalty of 5 runs was imposed on the USA team. At that time, India's score was 76/3 after 15 overs but it got the advantage of 5 runs and the score became 81/3 before the 16th over.
The USA team had committed two mistakes in the stop clock rule during India's innings and due to the delay in bringing on Jasmeet Singh, they committed the mistake for the third time and hence were penalised.
The ICC implemented the stop clock rule on a trial basis in December 2023 and again made it mandatory in ODIs and T20 Internationals in March and first started with the T20 World Cup 2024. Under this rule, if the bowling team takes more than 60 seconds to start bowling the next over after the completion of the previous over, then for doing so three times, a penalty of 5 runs will be imposed on it.
However, there are some exceptions to this rule. For example, if a new batsman comes to the wicket between overs or if an official break is taken. If the umpires approve on-field treatment of a batsman or fielder's injury. However, if the time lost occurs due to any circumstances beyond the control of the fielding side, then there will be no penalty.
