The Board of Control for Cricket in India is in the process of hiring a new head coach for the men’s Indian team. Several names were in the fray, but the apex body seems to have finalised Gautam Gambhir, who is associated with Kolkata Knight Riders as a mentor. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly wrote an indirect message to the board, advising the decision-makers to choose the coach wisely. His statement went viral on social media, with fans taking out different meanings.

Gambhir is the front-runner to replace the outgoing coach, Rahul Dravid, after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

“The coach’s significance in one’s life, their guidance, and relentless training shape the future of any person, both on and off the field. So choose the coach and institution wisely,” he wrote on X.

Some fans believed that the former batter remembered what happened to him under Greg Chappell, while many questioned whether the veteran cricketer was against Gambhir’s appointment.

Ganguly had played a crucial role in bringing Chappell on board as India’s head coach. However, they turned against each other, and the Indian player was sacked as captain and even dropped from the team.

Sourav returned to the squad in 2006, but his bond with Greg was never the same. Even the other senior players were unhappy with the Australian. He was removed after India’s first-round exit from the ODI World Cup in 2007.

Here is how the fans reacted to Ganguly’s tweet

There are no differences between Ganguly and Gambhir. Gautam replaced Sourav as the KKR captain after the former failed to win the IPL for KKR in the first three seasons. Gambhir won two IPl trophies for the Knight Riders in 2012 and 2014.
