The BCCI is looking for a new coach for the men’s team as the current coach, Rahul Dravid’s tenure will end after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The apex body of Indian cricket has made it mandatory to reapply for the job. Dravid has decided to part ways. Gautam Gambhir is the front-runner to replace the outgoing coach.
There is no information on whether he has applied for the job or not, as the deadline date of May 27 has already passed. According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI has almost finalized his name, and the veteran has informed the biggies of Kolkata Knight Riders about his intentions of leaving the three-time champions.
He was Kolkata’s mentor in the 17th season and played a major role in their success. Prior to the recently concluded season, he worked with Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor for two years.
KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan is aware of Gambhir’s departure.
After KKR’s title triumph in Chennai, Gambhir and BCCI secretary Jay Shah had a conversation at the Chepauk.
Meanwhile, SRK was the main reason Gambhir agreed to return to KKR. The famous owner gave him a blank cheque and urged him to remain with the team for the next 10 years.
Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer were said to be in the race, but Shah’s statement ruled out the possibility of signing any Australian.
He also spoke about the importance of knowing the Indian domestic cricket for those who are willing to apply for the head coach position.
