While playing on home soil as defending world champions, the ability to make a choice may be a curse more than anything else. India's T20I squad that was announced earlier this month after a T20 World Cup victory in March, comes as one of their strongest possible lineups, featuring in-form stars like Shreyas Iyer. The Arun Jaitley Stadium will host the three-match T20I series that will act as a launchpad for the men in blue for the Asian Games. However, the team management may have several questions to answer despite a full complement of top-order stars and pace spearheads.

While the middle order and pace bowling attack seem set in stone.

There are three selection conundrums that the team management may have to face while naming the squad.

The Opening Act: Abhishek Sharma vs. Sanju Samson

The top order has always been a hotbed of high-octane drama, but there is a new boy in town now as teenager Vaibhav Suryavanshi has made it big on the back of a sensational campaign in Zimbabwe. Having clinched one opening slot, a vacancy has cropped up for his partner in the top order that has set off a tussle between Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson.

For Abhishek, it has been a story of two halves as the dynamic southpaw has not had much luck in the international arena which has seen him amass just 11 runs on his recent tour of Zimbabwe. However, to dismiss the man who has scored a mind-boggling 242 runs at a strike rate of 268.89 in the Sher-e-Punjab T20 League as a flop is doing a disservice to the man's ability to rattle games in the powerplay.

His opposite number in the battle for the opening slot is Sanju Samson, who has been rewarded for his wait in the wings after staying in the selectors' good books. The right-hander provides a contrasting dimension with his experience and the ability to provide a completely different look alongside Sooryavanshi, who, despite being on the same franchise (Rajasthan Royals) in the past, have never opened the innings together for India. Will management go with the tried and trusted Abhishek or would they prefer to gamble on Samson?

The Spin Equation: Washington Sundar vs. Ravi Bishnoi

Balancing the attack without tipping the scales too much towards all-rounders is a fine art to master, and the challenge is even more difficult when it comes to choosing the support bowlers for the main slow-spinners Axar Patel and Varun Chakaravarthy. Considering India's appetite towards all-rounders if a squad comprising Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy is thought up, then the spin-bowling enforcer in the final XI will be either Washington Sundar or Ravi Bishnoi.

While Sundar is more than just a slow-spinner, his exploits in the power-play can often be offset by the lower-order batting in the limited-overs format. Though his much-anticipated tour to England has been cut short due to an injury, he has proved his worth time and again in playing a pivotal role when the innings require a change of gear.

In stark contrast to Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi is pure wrist-spin magic, and with Kuldeep Yadav's absence (since the World Cup) from the shortest format, Bishnoi has been handed every opportunity that has come his way. After a lean IPL 2026, the leg-spinner has been in fine form in Zimbabwe and is likely to get more chances if the management feels that using four frontline slow-spinners in an innings is not too many.

The Pace-Bowling Balance: Shivam Dube vs. Nitish Kumar Reddy

Pacing the innings in the shortest format will be a tough ask, but the management is more than aware of the need to utilize both Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy in the XI. However, if they wish to tweak their tactics and try out a different combination, then it will inevitably lead to a toss-up between Dube and Reddy.

Speaking of Reddy, he would appear to be the first name on the scoresheet as he prepares to fill in as the third seamer in tandem with Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh. However, the management has reason to hesitate after having seen the 25-year-old fast bowler's action as he comes back from an injury-laid-off period in order to avoid overexposure ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.

With that being said, the onus falls on Dube to prove that he can be a regular feature in the T20I setup. The 21-year-old has come a long way since his debut as he has bowled his full quota of overs in the recent series against Zimbabwe and has also excelled in Ireland and England.
