India vs Japan T20I: India are set to make a rare trip into new cricketing territory later this month, with the men's team scheduled to face Japan in a T20 International on September 22.

BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia said the board was delighted to be involved in an occasion that would take the Indian team into "new territory" while helping introduce cricket to a wider audience in Japan and East Asia.

"India and Japan share a strong and longstanding relationship and friendship, and we are pleased that cricket will be part of the celebrations marking 75 years of bilateral relations between the two countries," Saikia said.

He added that the BCCI believes cricket's growth needs to extend beyond its traditional markets and that the world's largest cricket board has a responsibility to contribute to that expansion.

The fixture is part of Sport 75, an initiative linked to an agreement reached during a summit between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. The programme is intended to promote human exchanges and cooperation between the two countries through sport.

Japan Cricket Association Excited To Host India

JCA CEO Naoki Miyaji welcomed the opportunity to host the reigning T20 world champions, calling India's visit a landmark moment for Japanese cricket.

"To be able to invite the reigning World Champions to the home of cricket in Japan is a landmark moment for our association," Miyaji said.

He also encouraged Japanese fans who are curious about cricket to attend the match and support the home team.

The fixture could also feature players already travelling to Japan for the 2026 Asian Games.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Shreyas Iyer are among the Indian players named in the Asian Games squad and are expected to be in the country around the time of the match.

The India-Japan contest will come just before the men's cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games, which begins later in September. Japan's official schedule lists India among the teams competing in the Games.

For Japan, facing India represents an opportunity to showcase cricket to a much wider domestic audience. For India, the fixture provides an unusual international assignment while contributing to a broader sporting initiative between the two nations.
