In a T20, chasing down a small target is never easy. A disciplined line and length, an early wicket or two and a bit of pressure really help when defending a low score. At times when the pitch was providing plenty of assistance in Dubai, Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu decided to step up and bowl, taking on the responsibility of defending the modest total of 124, giving one of the most lethal bowling performances a spinner has ever given in international cricket.

As Indonesia chased down 125, Chamari walked straight into the attack in the fourth over, and what followed was a masterclass of spin bowling, dismantling the Indonesian top and middle order in a matter of a few overs.

An Unstoppable Onslaught: Chamari Athapaththu

Chamari Athapaththu struck early, picking up wickets with her fourth, seventh, and eighth deliveries. Although a hat-trick was elusive in her opening salvo, the Sri Lankan captain was far from done. Picking up another wicket in her third over, she returned for her fourth and final over to wrap up a spectacular win. Completing three wickets in three balls, the left-arm spinner pulled off a hat-trick and a rare win.

Indonesia was bundled out for 49 all out with only Rahmawati Pangestuti (10) and Ni Made Putri Suwandewi (12 not out) managing double figures against an emphatic Sri Lankan bowling attack.

The match turned out to be much more dangerous for Sri Lanka than it initially appeared. Chasing first, the visitors were reeling at 62-6 after a composed opening spell from Indonesia's Ni Luh Dewi, who picked up 3-32. It took a counter-attacking 50 off 35 balls from Nilakshika Silva to steer Sri Lanka to a competitive total of 124-7.

Athapaththu finished with extraordinary figures of 7-5 in just 3.3 overs (21 balls) to set a new benchmark for the best bowling figures by a player from a Full Member Nation in women's T20Is.

Her performance bettered the previous record set by Zimbabwe's Esther Mbofana, who took 6-11 against Eswatini in 2021.
