Delhi: Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will not be organized this year. BCB President Tamim Iqbal confirmed this on Thursday. He said that the board first wants to fix the financial and administrative problems to the league.
BPL has been in many controversies for some time now. Violations of franchise rules, outstanding dues to players, bank guarantees and allegations of corruption have affected the tournament. Apart from poor scheduling and logistics in the 2025 season, there was also controversy regarding the payment of players.
According to Tamim Iqbal, BCB has suffered a loss of about 3.3 million dollars i.e. about Rs 31 crore from BPL in the last two years. He said that the board should make profit from franchise cricket, not loss.
Tamim said that BPL is a great tournament and there is a lot of interest in it, but there is no point in making it a loss. The board will first correct its economic model.
Tamim made it clear that not holding the tournament this year does not mean ending BPL. BCB wants to bring it back with better arrangements.
He said that the board is fully committed to conducting BPL, but will not be in a hurry. If necessary, it may take six to 12 months to restart it.
BCB has started talks with the existing franchises and plans to complete the franchise process by April or May next year. Those teams which will not be able to fulfill their financial responsibilities, new teams can be given a chance in their place. Apart from this, BCB is also considering the option of including foreign franchises in BPL.
Tamim Iqbal has recently been made the chairman of the new Franchise League Committee of ICC. He said that stopping BPL and removing its shortcomings can also be a big message for franchise cricket in the world.
