Delhi: On the first day of the Galle Test against Sri Lanka, the Indian team suffered a big blow when vice-captain KL Rahul retired hurt on 77 runs due to severe cramps. Rahul scored 77 runs in 162 balls, which included 9 fours and 1 six.
Rahul took over the innings after the early dismissal of Yashasvi Jaiswal and along with Devdutt Padikkal, put India in a strong position. There was an excellent partnership of 150 runs between the two for the second wicket.
Rahul was already feeling trouble. Before tea, he had a cramp in his right hand in the 51st over, after which the physio treated him on the field itself. Rahul continued batting after this and remained unbeaten till tea.
When Rahul came on the field again after tea, his problems increased considerably. He immediately told the umpires that he was not feeling well and was finding it difficult to hold the bat.
After this, he also started having severe cramps in his left hand and wrist. Strain was also seen in the muscles of his legs. Rahul appeared to be in a lot of pain and went out of the field with the help of the team physio.
After leaving the field, Rahul also had trouble climbing the stairs to the dressing room. Indian team physio Kamlesh Jain supported him and took him to the dressing room.
At present it is not clear when Rahul will be able to return to bat again in India's first innings. The team is keeping an eye on his fitness.
Rahul batted with great patience during his innings. He faced 162 balls and completed his 21st Test half-century.
After Rahul retired hurt, captain Shubman Gill came on the field and supported Devdutt Padikkal. At the time of Rahul's exit, India's score was 1 wicket for 197 runs in 53 overs.
The 150-run partnership between Rahul and Padikkal brought India out of the initial shock. Now Team India is eyeing a big score, but Rahul's injury has definitely increased the concern amid good batting on the first day.
