India's upcoming two-test series against Sri Lanka is a high-stakes encounter, as not only the World Test Championship points for 2025-17 will be on the line, but also their position in the table for the same. However, even before the teams have faced each other, India's advantage is clear – they boast a superior spin bowling attack.

With India at fifth and Sri Lanka at sixth in the International Cricket Council (ICC) WTC standings with 48.15 and 41.67 per cent points respectively, a two-nil victory over their rivals will propel them to 57.58 per cent. This puts them in a commanding position for the WTC, which is expected to be one of the closest tussles ever for the top spot.

Galle's spin-friendly conditions could play into India's hands

The first Test in Galle may well provide the ideal setting to witness the strength of India's top order. Galle has produced the most wickets to spin since 2023 of any Test venue, with 177 dismissals in total.

That statistic may well define the Test series between India and Sri Lanka.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill are the two batsmen who have scored the most runs against spin in Tests since 2023, with Jaiswal leading the pack with 1,148 runs at 76.53, and Gill close behind with 1,073 runs at 56.47.

India's depth in the batting department is also on display, as Rishabh Pant averages 47.53 runs per innings, and Ravindra Jadeja averages 45.70. Their team average of 35.3 against spin in Tests since 2023 gives them an advantage in a series where the surface is expected to assist the spinners who will be in play.

For Sri Lanka, the challenge will be finding ways to expose a batting line-up that has repeatedly proven itself to be able to withstand the conditions against spin.

Shubman Gill's transformation is on display elsewhere too

When separating out his Test statistics before and after taking on the role of India's captain, Gill's numbers show significant improvement. He scored 1,076 runs at 82.76 in his 15 innings as captain, including six centuries and one career best 269. In his previous 59 Test innings as a batter before the role, he was scoring at 35.05.

Gill has joined the pantheon of great Test captains, sitting second in terms of average amongst those who have played at least 10 innings with the bat in hand, behind Sir Don Bradman's ridiculous 101.51. The Sri Lanka series represents another opportunity for Gill to prove his mettle in the role, and perhaps secure his legacy as both a great captain and batsman for India's next generation.

It is evident that the conditions and numbers point to two particular themes for India's upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.

The first being an opportunity for India to improve their position in the WTC. A clean sweep of Sri Lanka would take them from 48.15 per cent to 57.58 per cent, helping them immensely in the WTC race, and providing much-needed breathing room ahead of a grueling schedule. The second issue is whether India's record against spin can be replicated, or exploited, in Galle.

Jaiswal, Gill, Pant, and Jadeja each represent strengths in different facets of the game, with Jaiswal and Gill possessing the best numbers against spin in the team. Gill's rise to the captaincy, with fantastic numbers since taking on the role, would seem to highlight the conditions as perfect for him to build upon his already excellent numbers as a batter.

On paper, the conditions are ideal for India.

But, as is often the case in Test cricket, the reality may well differ. Galle may well provide a stern test for both teams, as the surface spins and the skill of the batters is put under the sharpest inspection. If India can replicate their numbers against spin from the last few years, they may well be able to secure their position as a top contender in the WTC.

If they fail to do so, Sri Lanka has an opportunity to make life far more difficult for India, and perhaps even steal points in the WTC race. For India, the challenge is to use their best weapon, and exploit the conditions in Galle to the absolute maximum.
