When Gautam Gambhir took charge of the Indian cricket team in 2024 after the legendary Rahul Dravid, the new captain struggled with high expectations and significant responsibilities. Since then, the Indian cricket team has had a rollercoaster of a ride that saw both white-ball triumphs and red-ball embarrassments. Despite suffering consecutive series losses against lower-ranked teams such as Ireland and England, along with a growing number of dissatisfied fans, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retain the current coach.

As per the report, the BCCI will not make any changes to the coaching staff, which means that Gautam Gambhir will remain in the position until his contract expires in 2027.

Trophies Amid the Chaos: Gautam Gambhir's era

Gautam Gambhir's stint has been anything but ordinary as the Men in Blue added two more trophies to the locker under his watch, in the form of the 2025 Champions Trophy and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Still, the manner in which the Test unit has performed, even as the limited-overs teams have excelled, has raised a few questions about his future in charge of the franchise; nevertheless, a few notable names have emerged in the alternate captaincy race in the event of an adverse turn of events.

The biggest name to emerge in recent months and a former stand-in skipper himself, VVS Laxman, had even floated the prospect of taking over as head coach if circumstances demanded. Laxman, who initially declined the offer to be the head coach back in 2024 and eventually took Gambhir's role as the batting coach at the beginning of this year, still holds the post of running the BCCI's Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.

With the BCCI also considering his potential candidacy for the chief selector post, there appears no chance for such a transition to happen in the near future, with Gambhir seemingly set to retain his position as head coach of the Men in Blue at least till the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The Red-Ball Conundrum and the Narrative of Mismanagement

The narrative around the Test team has mostly revolved around the heartbreaking 0-2 home series defeat against South Africa at the end of last year. The Proteas, led by their talisman Temba Bavuma, accounted for the Men in Blue in both the Tests in Kolkata and Guwahati. The visitors registered their first-ever Test series win on Indian soil, ending a 25-year-long wait for the same.

Still, the board is not necessarily unhappy with the turn of events, primarily because several crucial players are unavailable for selection due to injuries.

Shubman Gill, for instance, had to retire hurt at four runs in Kolkata after a freak injury to his neck, which proved to be costly as the hosts were batting 124 for the loss of a single wicket in the second innings.

His absence, along with those of Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Mohammad Shami, led to a disastrous 93 as the Men in Blue were all out. Still inside the corridors of power is the belief that a fully fit squad would have ensured a different result against the Proteas.

The Road Ahead in Galle

With the World Test Championship (2025-27) resuming with the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, the Men in Blue will be without Jasprit Bumrah, Sai Sudharsan, and Washington Sundar. Shubman Gill and Gautam Gambhir, therefore, must rise to the occasion and lead from the front. While there may be a ton of activity in the boardroom regarding the management of the senior squad, the head coach, and the captaincy, rest assured the BCCI's mantras remain the same. Gambhir will retain his position as head coach, with the selectors being given enough time and leeway to usher in a new era.
