India all-rounder Washington Sundar’s chances of playing the Test series against Sri Lanka are very slim, according to a TOI report. The 26-year-old injured his hamstring while batting for India in the second ODI against England in Cardiff.

The player was initially named in the squad for the Sri Lanka tour with the hope that he would get fit for the second Test match.

However, his availability is still uncertain, and there is a possibility of the youngster getting ruled out of the series. The Centre of Excellence (CoE) IS cautious regarding the player due to the massive amount of injury issues in the team.

If the player is ruled out, then he will become the third cricketer after jasprit bumrah and Sai Sudharsan to miss the tour.

Auqib Nabi and Sarfaraz Khan were named as the replacements for both players. It is unlikely that any new player will be added to the squad if Sundar is ruled out.

One source speaking to TOI said, “At this moment, Washington Sundar’s chances of making it to the Sri Lanka series are very slim. Team management has been asked to plan accordingly. BCCI’s medical team is wary of pushing the player to play Test cricket after a few players have got injured again after making a recovery.”

The source also added, “Sundar was picked only for the second Test match, knowing it will be touch-and-go for the player to regain full fitness. He hasn’t played since getting injured during the England tour last month, and his workload will be carefully managed.”

When asked if any player will be sent to Sri Lanka as Sundar’s replacement, the source replied, “He will be the 16th member of the side if Sundar joins the team. We should assess whether it is worth sending a player on tour without much practice.

A thorough assessment will be done next week, which includes how the team has performed in the first Test.”

Massive fitness updates on Jasprit Bumrah and Akash Deep’s fitness

Jasprit played the first two games in the ODI series against England. He injured his knee, which saw him miss the Lord’s ODI and also the upcoming Test series against the Lankans.

“CoE was working on the pacer’s workload before the Lanka series.

It was found that the cricketer wouldn’t be ready in time. It has been a long time since he played Test cricket, and the CoE is careful about him,” a BCCI source told TOI.

Akash Deeplast played in February 2026, is another player who has been on the sidelines. “CoE was targetting Akash Deep’s return for the series in Sri Lanka, which didn’t happen. There has been no communication with the team management or selectors. There is a hope that he will be fit for New Zealand. It will be a huge boost if both the seamers are fit for the tour.”
