On matchdays 27 and 28, the Men’s Hundred deliverable was simple for four teams that entered the fixtures in a tight race to set their destiny: show up or shut up. And when the final overs were bowled, Sunrisers Leeds produced a masterclass of batting power to crush Welsh Fire, while London Spirit battled through the middle order to stave off a deficit and emphatically blow past Birmingham Phoenix.

The contrasting wins sent both sides scrambling up the table, with Sunrisers consolidating their place at the top and London Spirit surging back into the mix.

Welsh Fire

At Headingley, Sunrisers Leeds made a statement of intent with the bat as they raced to a huge white-ball total. With a rampant opening stand of 89 from 51 balls between Mitchell Marsh and Ryan Rickelton, the Sunrisers put pressure on Welsh Fire straight from the word go. Marsh scored a crucial half-century while Rickelton played his part with a swift 40 before being removed. After that blistering start, the fireworks were lit by the middle-order who added 110 runs from 67 balls to reach 201 for 4

Harry Brook was the first to add his name to the score sheet with a rapid 23 from 11 balls.

Zak Crawley then added 34 from 12 deliveries before Dan Lawrence launched a six and four in consecutive balls to finish with 29 from 15.

Despite the pressure being on, experienced overseas campaigner Chris Woakes failed to deliver, managing just 41 from his 20 balls while he picked up two wickets.

Chase by Welsh Fire was always going to be a thankless task as they struggled to keep up with the asking rate. Matthew Short and Joe Root gave the Welsh county a glimmer of hope before falling away quickly. From 101 for 3, the innings went downhill from there as they were all out for 105 for 6 in the final over.

Brydon Carse removed three while Nathan Ellis bagged two as they failed to get past the 162 posted by Sunrisers Leeds. A superb 202-run stand between Joe Clarke and Sean Dickson saw the score reach 162 for 4 in the final over.

London Spirit vs. Birmingham Phoenix: Liam Livingstone and Dewald Brevis Stand Out in Lord’s Showdown

At Lord’s, London Spirit came within reach of a win after a gutsy reply from Birmingham Phoenix, who recovered from a stunning opening spell to post a competitive total.

Birmingham Phoenix were reeling at 46 for 3 in the 44th ball before a brilliant 92-run stand between Joe Clarke and Sean Dickson saw them reach a competitive 162 for 4.

Clarke stood firm with a composed 73 while Dickson remained unbeaten on 51 from 28 balls. A late 5-ball 14 from captain Donovan Ferreira saw them reach 162 for 4.

Spirit’s reply got off to a flying start as Jonny Bairstow hit a four and a six off his first two balls, but he was out on his third delivery, leaving London in a perilous position after the dangerous opening stand of Pretorius and Bairstow.

Next came the turn of Liam Livingstone and Dewald Brevis, who launched an attack on the Phoenix bowling battery but in the most spectacular way as the two put on a wonderful 103-run stand to take the game away from their opponents.

Livingstone played a special innings of 66 off just 30 balls while his partner Brevis remained not out at 55 off 31 balls. Spirit added 18 balls to their tally with a match-winning 10 wickets in hand to make the chase a cakewalk for them.

The Final Standings:

With 20 points now, Sunrisers Leeds are marvellously placed at second with a terrific Net Run Rate of +1.094 as they are only a whisker away from top-placed Trent Rockets.

On the other hand, London Spirit’s crucial victory has helped them get to 8 points as they are level with Southern Brave and can still salvage their Super League spot, while Birmingham Phoenix find themselves languishing at the bottom of the table.
