Sai Sudharsan was the recent name to join the growing list of Indian cricket stars who are injured. The 24-year-old batter was initially named in the squad for the Sri Lanka tour, but his availability was subject to fitness clearance. It was revealed on Saturday that the player failed to recover from his injury and was ruled out of the tour.
Jasprit Bumrah, who was also named in the squad, will also miss the series due to a knee injury, with Auqib Nabi replacing him. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to have key talks with members of the Centre of Excellence (COE) over the latest injury crisis. PTI reported that BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia will hold key talks with former India batter VVS Laxman, who is part of the CoE.
One source, while speaking to PTI, said that the Board secretary is in Bengaluru and will have a conversation with Laxman. A source also added that it is not known if coach Gautam Gambhir or selection committee chief Ajit Agarkar will join the meeting.
Injury to Sudharsan has opened the door for a replacement. Devdutt Padikkal’s century in the warm-up match has confirmed his place in the starting XI for the Galle Test. The 26-year-old scored 142 not out and will bat at number three.
Shubman Gill, who missed the first two days of the warm-up match between India and Sri Lanka Cricket XI, batted in the second innings. He looked in good touch and seemed to be ready for the first Test starting August 15. According to TOI, Sarfaraz Khan or Shaik Rasheed are the front-runners to replace the injured Sudharsan.
Fast bowler Akash Deep, as per PTI, is out due to a lower back stress fracture. The 29-year-old last played for India at the Oval in 2025. His last cricket match was for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, where he picked up three wickets.
