Yashasvi Jaiswal had a disastrous day two outing for India in the three-day practice match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo on Monday. The Indian opener was dismissed for a two-ball duck after edging left-arm pacer Vishwa Fernando to the gully.
Yashasvi Jaiswal was at the crease with KL Rahul, as the Sri Lanka Cricket XI declared their first innings at 363/8. However, the Indian opener could only survive two deliveries before being removed by Fernando, as the gully fielder pouches the low chance. Consequently, Jaiswal will fail to contribute in India’s last warm-up match ahead of the Test series.
The dismissal against Fernando is another in a long line of Jaiswal’s issues with left-arm pace in Test cricket. The 24-year-old has been dismissed nine times by left-arm seamers in Test matches, three of which have come in his last four World Test Championship innings against South Africa at home in 2022.
Marco Jansen, Mitchell Starc and Nandre Burger have each dismissed Jaiswal three times in Test matches. His edged cut drive in Colombo was also in keeping with his troubles when playing the shot; he has been out seven times in Test matches when attempting it since his debut.
Meanwhile, the cut has been a prolific shot for Jaiswal in Test matches, being responsible for almost 400 of his runs in the format.
Jaiswal’s timing could not have come at a worse moment for the India setup, as they prepare for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka. The first Test between the rivals is scheduled to begin in Galle on August 15, with the second set to follow in Colombo from August 23.
Yashasvi Jaiswal’s previous Test match prior to the island nation trip was the solitary match against Afghanistan, which did not count towards the WTC. He managed to score 24 runs in that game and will be looking to get back to scoring form ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka.
India could get a second chance to bat in the ongoing practice match, which will allow Jaiswal to get more time at the crease and ready himself for the Galle Test.
