His innings contained four fours and five sixes, and his fifty — reached from just 19 deliveries — was the fastest half-century recorded by the franchise across both its current identity and its previous form as Oval Invincibles.
Entering at a Critical Moment
When James Vince was bowled by Nathan Ellis for 17, MI London's chase had reached a delicate point. Two wickets had already fallen in the opening ten deliveries — Will Jacks and Jason Roy both dismissed cheaply by Brydon Carse — and the top order had spent much of its time negotiating rather than scoring. Pooran came in with the required rate demanding and the match still genuinely in the balance.
His first few deliveries against Ellis were watchful — a drive to deep cover, a delivery he missed entirely as an off-cutter beat his edge — but the intent was clear from the outset. He scored a single to reach his end of the crease and then began to impose himself on the innings from the moment the slower bowlers entered the attack.
Dismantling the Spin Options
Benny Howell was the first to feel the full force of Pooran's striking. In a single five-delivery stretch, Pooran hit him for four, six, and four in consecutive deliveries — the first lifted with the angle over fine leg, the second a gorgeous straight hit over long on, and the third a slog sweep to fine leg — before taking a single off the final ball. That sequence of 14 runs from three scoring shots effectively ended Howell's ability to contain the scoring.
Dan Lawrence's offbreaks were treated with similar authority. Pooran struck him for a six with a heave that, in the words of the live commentary, kissed the moon on its way down just inside the boundary rope, and continued to find the boundary as the required rate was gradually brought under control.
Abrar Ahmed, who had shown some early promise with the ball, was targeted in the over that effectively sealed the chase. Pooran struck him for a six over straight midwicket off one delivery and then swept another high over square leg for a second maximum in the same over. At that point, with MI London needing 17 from 25 balls, the match had shifted irrevocably.
The Winning Blow
Pooran brought up his fifty from 19 deliveries with a tickle off Ellis around the corner for four, and reached 54 by the time Matthew Potts came back for his final over. Three balls from the end of that over, he launched a delivery from Potts beyond mid off — a four that sealed both his fifty and the match simultaneously. MI London needed nothing more; they had won by seven wickets with 16 balls remaining.
His partnership with Sam Curran — who contributed 60 not out from 39 balls at the other end — was worth 93 from 40 deliveries, the stand that transformed a demanding chase into a comprehensive victory. Pooran's own contribution of 93 runs scored during that partnership came in 19 balls of his own, with Curran accumulating the remainder.
In his post-match comments, as recorded in the official broadcast, Pooran described the importance of Curran and James Vince weathering the early storm before he arrived, acknowledged the slower nature of the pitch early in the innings, and noted that once the lights came on and the ball began to slide on, the chase became more manageable. He also noted it was pleasing to score a fifty with his family present at the ground. The award of Match Hero was based on his in-game contribution as the standout performer of the evening.
