Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta has shared his thoughts on Team India’s preparations ahead of the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka. While the Indian team has dealt with several injury setbacks in recent months, Dasgupta believes the current training camp presents a rare opportunity for the coaching staff to prepare the squad properly before a major Test assignment.
India’s recent overseas tours have often been disrupted by injuries and player unavailability, forcing the team management to make frequent changes. However, with nearly two weeks available before the opening Test in Galle, Dasgupta feels head coach Gautam Gambhir and his support staff can finally focus on improving players rather than constantly dealing with unexpected setbacks.
Deep Dasgupta explains India’s biggest challenge before Sri Lanka Tests
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Dasgupta pointed out that India’s biggest challenge over the past few tours has been the recurring injury concerns that have prevented the coaching staff from executing their plans.
According to the former wicketkeeper, previous tours such as Ireland and England turned into “firefighting” exercises, where coaches had to continuously adjust the playing combination because players kept becoming unavailable.“In my opinion, this is a dream preparation for Team India. If we compare the preparations with the Ireland and England tour, that was not ideal; that was like firefighting. Players were getting injured, players were unavailable. So as a coach, you are not able to prepare anything. Just as you set a playing XI, someone or the other gets injured, then they have to change it. It will be rare that India gets 10-15 days to prepare for a series,” he said.
Dasgupta also highlighted how difficult it becomes for the coaching staff when injuries force last-minute changes to the playing XI.
Extended preparation camp gives India a major advantage
Dasgupta believes the lengthy preparation period allows the coaching staff to spend valuable time working with players instead of simply managing workloads in the days leading up to a Test match. He explained that coaches can now focus on improving individual skills, refining game plans and helping players adapt to Sri Lankan conditions well before the series begins.
“Gautam Gambhir will prefer preparation camps like this because he is actually getting to coach players. Just a day or two before the match, you are not coaching, you are managing players,” he concluded.
India will still head into the series with a few injury concerns. All-rounder Washington Sundar has already been ruled out of the opening Test due to a hamstring injury, while fast bowler Akash Deep continues his recovery from stress reactions in his back. Despite those setbacks, the extended training camp provides the team with valuable time to finalise combinations before the first Test, which begins on August 15 in Galle under the captaincy of Shubman Gill.
