Explained: Why KL Rahul practised vs spin on damp pitch ahead of Sri Lanka Tests

KL Rahul recently shared an Instagram video that caught everyone's attention not for flashy strokes, but for an unusual training drill. Instead of batting on pristine nets, the India vice-captain was seen practicing on a damp, muddy pitch in Mumbai. The ball was gripping, turning sharply, and occasionally keeping low, perfectly mimicking the spin-friendly conditions expected in Sri Lanka.

The Indian squad arrived in Sri Lanka on August 4 ahead of a three-day warm-up match starting August 7. Rahul, the only batter in the current squad to have featured in India's 2015 and 2017 tours of Sri Lanka, carries invaluable experience.
His record there is 268 runs at an average of 33 with one century and two fifties is steady but not spectacular.

The damp pitch drill served a clear purpose: to force Rahul to play with soft hands, delay strokes, and adjust late to sharp turn and variable bounce. It also sharpens footwork and patience, two essentials on Galle and Colombo tracks.

India have been the strongest visiting batting side in Sri Lanka since 2015, averaging 41 runs per wicket. With a young unit under Shubman Gill, Rahul's role as guide and senior batter becomes even more critical.
The series also carries heavy WTC weight; India are fifth with 48.15%, and every point matters in the race for the 2027 final.
