Sunrisers entered this match at the Kia Oval with what looked, for a brief and promising period, like a genuine route to victory. Brydon Carse had MI London reeling at 8 for 2 inside two overs, and with the asking rate climbing and Nathan Ellis providing additional seam threat from the other end, the 144-run total appeared defendable. But a failure to build on that early pressure, combined with an inability to contain Nicholas Pooran and Sam Curran through the middle and final overs, turned a competitive position into a seven-wicket defeat with 16 balls remaining.

Carse and Ellis Build Early Pressure

Brydon Carse was the dominant figure with the ball in the first half of MI London's chase. Operating at 87–91 mph with genuine seam movement, he dismissed Will Jacks in the sixth ball of the innings — the ball angling in before seaming away, drawing a miscued heave that looped to Benny Howell at cover. Two balls later, Jason Roy edged to Mitchell Marsh at slip for a duck on his 36th birthday, Carse again finding the outside edge with movement off the surface.

Carse bowled ten consecutive balls to open the innings and returned figures of 2 for 18 from his 20 balls — the most economical and effective spell of the match. His ability to consistently hit the top of off stump at high pace, combined with movement in both directions, made him close to unplayable during his opening burst. Potts was similarly disciplined alongside him, and MI London were scoring at barely a run a ball through the first 25 deliveries.

Nathan Ellis reinforced Sunrisers' grip when he returned to dismiss James Vince — trapped into playing across a delivery that nipped in at pace and removed off stump — for 17, leaving MI London at 51 for 3 after 44 balls. At that moment Sunrisers had bowled themselves into a position where a defence of 144 was entirely feasible.

The Partnership That Decided the Match

The problem for Sunrisers was that once the initial damage was inflicted by Carse and Ellis, the slower bowlers in the attack could not sustain the pressure. Benny Howell's variations — knuckle balls, off-cutters, looping deliveries at 60–62 mph — were targeted immediately by Pooran, who hit two fours and a six off three consecutive Howell deliveries to accelerate MI London's scoring in the 55th ball phase of the innings.

Abrar Ahmed, brought into the attack with MI London needing 86 from 50 balls, was similarly treated. Two successive sixes off consecutive deliveries in his final over — one swept over square leg and one slapped over long on — shifted the equation sharply in MI London's favour. The leg-spinner finished with figures of 0 for 30 from his 10 balls. Dan Lawrence's off-spin was taken for runs as well, including a six from Pooran that barely cleared the boundary sponge but cleared it nonetheless.

Skipper Zak Crawley reintroduced Potts in the late stages to try to stem the flow, but Pooran hit the first ball of that spell for six and continued from there. Ellis returned for a final over but Pooran nudged a boundary off the last ball of that spell to reduce the equation to single figures. Sunrisers rotated bowlers — Ellis, Potts, Howell, Abrar Ahmed, Lawrence all used — without finding a combination that could slow the partnership.

No Answer for the Left-Hander Combination

A particular tactical difficulty for Sunrisers was that both Pooran and Curran are left-handed, which meant angle and line adjustments were required throughout. Several over-the-wicket and around-the-wicket changes were attempted — Ellis switched angles multiple times to Pooran, Abrar Ahmed came around the wicket to Curran — but neither batter was troubled enough to suggest a wicket was imminent once the partnership reached double figures.

The 50-partnership between Pooran and Curran came from just 23 deliveries. From 51 for 3 and needing 93, the two batters reduced the requirement to 11 from 20 balls in the space of 40 deliveries between them. The match was effectively settled by the start of the 17th over of MI London's innings. Potts conceded the winning boundary — a Pooran drive over mid off — with 16 balls still remaining. For Sunrisers, the manner in which an authoritative early bowling performance was ultimately unable to translate into a victory will be the defining feature of this result.
