The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed former player Subhadeep Ghosh as Team India’s new fielding coach. He replaced T Dilip, whose contract was not extended. The Indian Cricket Board is in the process of reshaping the Gautam Gambhir-led support staff.

The decision was taken amid India’s poor fielding performance across formats, with players dropping five catches in the third and final T20I against Zimbabwe.

Dilip was lauded for improving the fielding standards of the players during Rahul Dravid’s tenure as head coach. However, the situation became alarming under Gambhir, with players struggling on the field. The lapses in the field played a role in India’s defeat in Ireland and England.

With Gambhir advocating the need to fix accountability, there was a need to add a new face to the coaching staff.

Subhadeep Ghosh has been associated with the Centre for Excellence for years. He was hailed for his fielding in domestic cricket and was a middle-order batter and off-break bowler for  Assam and Railways.

The 57-year-old is from Digboi, Assam. In 17 First-Class and 17 List A appearances, he showed his agility and swift moves that led to his transition into coaching.

Ghosh has been working closely with the players on their fielding in Bengaluru. He was a part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team that won the IPL title in 2014 and then worked with the Delhi Capitals as fielding coach.

Ghosh was the fielding coach of the Indian women’s national team during the tour of Australia in 2021.

He has given his services to  India A and the India U-19 teams.

Known for his ground fielding, drills and focus, Ghosh would work closely with the players to eliminate the fielding errors as India get ready for important bilateral assignments in international cricket.
