Hardik Pandya’s recovery is no longer just about getting him fit for the next series; it’s about ensuring he is ready for India’s biggest assignment over the next 18 months.

After a string of injury setbacks since the latter stages of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly shifted its focus from short-term returns to a carefully managed long-term plan. According to a report, India’s premier pace-bowling all-rounder is being groomed with one objective in mind: arriving at the 2027 ODI World Cup in peak physical condition.

BCCI Prioritises Hardik Pandya’s Long-Term Fitness Over Immediate Return

Hardik Pandya’s latest setback came in the form of a low-grade quadriceps strain, sustained ahead of India’s ODI series against Afghanistan. The injury ruled him out of subsequent ODI assignments against Afghanistan and England, delaying what had appeared to be an imminent return after months of rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Center of Excellence (CoE).

The report states that Hardik has since been placed on a specialized “performance block” programme, designed to improve his overall fitness rather than fast-track him back into competitive cricket. The emphasis is on building durability and reducing the risk of recurring injuries that have interrupted his career in recent years.

Despite the temporary setback, the outlook is said to be encouraging.

“Hardik’s recovery had a few hiccups, but it’s absolutely fine now,” a source said.

The 32-year-old is reportedly closing in on full fitness and has already begun working towards regaining his optimum performance levels.

World Cup Takes Priority Over Bilateral Series

The report adds that the BCCI is prepared to carefully manage Hardik Pandya’s workload over the next year, even if that means limiting his appearances in bilateral white-ball series.

Instead of featuring in every tour, the all-rounder is expected to be used selectively, with a stronger emphasis on One-Day Internationals as India builds towards the 2027 World Cup.

“The focus is on the 2027 World Cup, where it would be imperative to have a fully fit Hardik Pandya,” the source said.

“Given his injury record, bilateral white-ball series are not a priority for him at the moment. Also, for the next one year, in the lead-up to the World Cup, he would be used mostly in the 50-over format.

“He has been working on a specific programme, and everyone is pretty confident about having him in top shape at the World Cup,” the source added.

Away from his rehabilitation, Hardik Pandya has also found himself at the center of IPL transfer speculation. The India star has reportedly been linked with potential moves to Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings during the ongoing trade window, although his immediate priority remains completing his recovery and returning to full fitness.

For both Hardik and the BCCI, the roadmap appears clear. Rather than chasing short-term gains, India is investing in ensuring one of its most valuable match-winners is available when it matters most, the 2027 World Cup.
