The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a performance review meeting of the Indian team’s recent white-ball campaigns in Ireland, England and Zimbabwe early next month, the report said, adding that the meeting will also deliberate on the retention of certain support staff working under chief coach Gautam Gambhir.

India had a nightmare start to their new era in T20 cricket as they were stunned by a 2-0 series defeat by minnows Ireland, followed by a 4-0 thrashing by England. They responded undoubtedly by clinching the three-match series against Zimbabwe with a game to spare, registering captain Shreyas Iyer’s first-ever series win as T20I skipper.

Gautam Gambhir and Support Staff Decisions Could Be on BCCI Agenda

Confirming that a review is on the cards, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board will deliberate on the team’s performances in the three overseas assignments, and meet in August to discuss the same.

“We will have the review meeting in August,” Saikia said in response to a query on Cricbuzz.

During the initial days after the disastrous series in Ireland and England, Saikia had said that the BCCI will focus only on the team’s performances on the field and what changes are needed to address the issues.

Speaking to ANI, he said, “The BCCI is currently observing the performance of the Indian T20 team, which has not been up to the mark in the series against England. But this is normal in international cricket, we think it is a purely bad phase.”

The former Indian opener said that the board needs to learn from the incident and make changes without creating too much of a drama. “India has won the T20 World Cup just four months back, the BCCI should not jump to any conclusion over the poor performance of the team in the recently concluded series against England.

There should be no knee-jerk reaction,” Gavaskar had written in his column for Sportstar.

“The BCCI is going to do a review of the defeat, and there are rumors that a few heads are likely to roll. That would be an overreaction, for barely four months ago India were the world champions,” Sunil Gavaskar wrote.

On the poor show of Indian batters against short pitching, he said, “There has been a lot of talk of how the Indian batters have been let down by the flat pitches in the IPL.

Even on those so-called flat pitches in the IPL, most Indian batters have failed against the short ball. That shows a technical deficiency. With the weight on the front foot and the back foot locked, there is no way of transferring the weight to deal with a rising ball.”
