A capital painted red and gold

In Madrid, the streets transformed into a sea of red jerseys with face painted supporters enthusiastically waving red flags. Tens of thousands of fans—who had braved scorching daytime temperatures of up to 35°C at outdoor fan zones to watch the match —flooded the city’s iconic landmarks.

Huge celebratory crowds streamed along the Paseo de Recoletos toward the Cibeles fountain, the traditional epicenter for national sports triumphs, while nearby Plaza de Colón was similarly packed.

Red flares and brilliant fireworks lit up the night sky, accompanied by endless chants of “Champions, champions!” and patriotic renditions of “And Long Live Spain”.

Another way Spaniards celebrated is that right after the final whistle, the capital’s gridlock turned into a carnival. City streets echoed with the synchronized blaring of car horns as supporters hung out of windows waving the national colours.

From beaches to hometown heroes

The party extended far beyond the capital, with synchronised celebrations broadcast from every major city.

In Barcelona, fans set off fireworks and packed the local beaches to celebrate deep into the night.

A particularly emotional celebration unfolded in Rocafonda, a working-class neighbourhood in Mataró, just north of Barcelona. Local residents flooded the streets to celebrate their hometown hero, 19-year-old teenage forward Lamine Yamal, who grew up learning to play football on those very streets.

Royal and Presidential Honours

The historic victory also saw high-profile celebrations right on the pitch. The Spanish squad was joined on the field by the Spanish Royal Family—King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, and Infanta Sofía—who all sported red attire.

Adding to the global spotlight, US President Donald Trump presented the coveted World Cup trophy during the official post-match ceremony, sharing highly publicized celebratory moments with the teenage sensation Yamal and the triumphant Spanish squad.
