Former West Indian stalwart Sir Garfield Sobers passed away on Friday at the age of 89. The news moved many former and current players who have been long admirers of the best all-round cricketer the world has seen. Sobers was the first man to hit six sixes in an over, achieving the feat for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan in 1968.
His knock of 365 not out was the highest ever individual score by a batter in Test cricket before it was broken in 1994 by Brian Lara against England in Antigua. Sobers would have turned 90 on 28th July, but sadly, cricket lost one of its greatest legends. Former India batter Sachin Tendulkar took to his social media account to mourn the loss.
“It’s incredibly tough to process that Sir Garry is gone. I’ve been looking back at the memories we shared over the years, from him handing me the Player of the Tournament trophy at the 2003 World Cup, to his warm words when he felicitated me for the century milestone. He was always so exceptionally gracious.

“My mind keeps going back to when we caught up in London a few years ago. We were just sitting and chatting about the game, and it hits me so hard right now that it was the last time we’d ever meet. He truly was the ‘One and Only’. Going to miss him immensely. Rest in peace, Sir Garry,” he wrote.
Former Indian skipper Virat Kohli also took to his X-handle and wrote, “Cricket has lost one of its greatest. Rest in peace, Sir Garfield Sobers. Your legacy will inspire generations.”

The batter had met the iconic all-rounder in 2023. His wife stood beside Sobers and patted him on the back before posing for a picture with Kohli.
West Indies Cricket took to their social media handle to announce that the final two ODIs vs New Zealand will be free for fans. It is to be noted that the games will be played at Kensington Oval in Barbados, the home ground of the recently departed cricket legend.
