The International Cricket Council (ICC) has made a big announcement for the Mahakumbh ODI World Cup 2027. Putting an end to the long-running media speculation, ICC has clarified that the next World Cup will be played with 14 teams only. This time the format of the tournament is going to be completely unique and exciting, which has been divided into three different rounds.

In the ICC Annual General Meeting held in Edinburgh, it was decided that this World Cup, to be jointly hosted by South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe, will be held in October-November 2027.

New concepts like ‘Super Series’ and ‘Super-7’ have been included in this tournament, which will double the thrill of the spectators.

What is the new format?

In the first round, the 11th, 12th and 13th ranked teams will play a ‘Super Series’ among themselves, in which the top team will enter the second round. There will be a total of 12 teams in the second round, which will be divided into two groups.

The top-3 teams from these groups will qualify for the ‘Super-7’ i.e. the third round. In the final round (Super-7), 7 teams will face each other in round-robin format and the top-4 teams of the points table will get the ticket for the semi-finals.

Changes in T20 World Cup 2028 also

ICC has made important changes not only in the ODI World Cup but also in the T20 World Cup 2028 to be held in Australia and New Zealand. 20 teams will remain intact in the tournament, but now ‘Super-10’ format will be adopted instead of ‘Super-8’.

This will result in a more tough competition in the second round.

These changes are definitely like a big gift for cricket fans, because now the equations of the tournament will change rapidly in every match, due to which the excitement will be at its peak.
