For months, the cricket administrators at the Bangladesh Cricket Board remained in anxious suspense. The heavily anticipated, eagerly awaited six-match white-ball series against arch-rival India, which was postponed thrice due to political unrest in August 2025 and scheduled to begin in September 2026, faced an uncertain future.
A scheduling conflict emerged in June that could see the matches get cancelled. On the 13th to 19th of September, Afghanistan was due to play a T20I series in Delhi, which meant that the Indian Men in Blue would be unable to host the two countries’ cricket teams at the same time.
For the Bangladesh Cricket Board, there was no higher priority than Tamim Iqbal, the newly elected BCB president and former Bangladesh captain, who traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland, for the ICC annual meeting.Even before signing the agreement, BCB took a risky decision. It invited worldwide bids for telecast and media rights for the six-match bilateral series. While many believed that it was a done deal, the move from BCB was actually a gamble, as the BCCI had still not given the final go-ahead.
BCB even hinted that security measures would be taken to an altogether new level as and when the Indian team arrived in Bangladesh. However, as days went by, there was no response from Mumbai. “We haven’t got the green signal as yet from the BCCI, but they also have not said that they will not come,” revealed an official from the BCB, summing up the anxious mood in Dhaka.
While a lot of bureaucracy was involved in making the deal official, it was a personal connection that helped the deal see the light of day.
Tamim Iqbal was well aware of the fact that he had a trump card up his sleeve in the form of his good relationship with the newly elected BCCI President, Mithun Manhas. As the BCCI and BCB officials were busy discussing the future schedule in Edinburgh, the two old domestic rivals were busy cutting deals in the meanwhile. Tamim made sure to brief his counterpart on the importance of maintaining good ties with the neighboring nation. It was a matter of time before a deal was struck. To give the impression that no match was being pushed off to accommodate the other, the BCCI decided to extend their own schedule.
As such, the Afghanistan series, which was due to start on September 13, would now begin on September 17.With the logistical nightmare now sorted out, an exciting schedule for the fans of the region has finally taken shape. It is now set for a busy autumn as they host a marquee series in Mirpur and Chattogram before welcoming Afghanistan in Delhi.
| matches | date | Venue |
| 1st ODI | September 1 | Mirpur |
| 2nd ODI | September 3 | Mirpur |
| 3rd ODI | September 6 | Chattogram |
| 1st T20I | September 9 | Chattogram |
| 2nd T20I | September 12 | Mirpur |
| 3rd T20I | September 13 | Mirpur |
By stretching the calendar and adjusting a single date, cricket administration proved that sometimes, the toughest puzzles are solved not on the pitch, but over a quiet cup of coffee between old friends.
