Indian cricket team beat England by six wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series on Tuesday. The star of the show was Axar Patelwho claimed four wickets with the ball and also slammed an unbeaten fifty. The 32-year-old was named Player of the Match for his performances at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.
Patel bowled 9.5 overs with the ball and picked up 4/62, which included the wicket of Liam Dawson for 68 runs. The left-arm spinner then ran through the lower order to bowl out the hosts for 258 with 13 balls left in the innings. Dawson and Joe Root had frustrated the Indian bowlers with their stand of 121 runs for the seventh wicket.
During the chase, India lost quick wickets with the score reading 160 for 4, and 99 runs were still needed. That’s when Axar and Washington Sundar came together and added an unbeaten 102 runs to seal the game. While Sundar scored 52 not out, Patel’s knock of 57 came off mere 52 balls with five boundaries and a six.
With his fifty and four wickets, the Delhi Capitals star joined Sachin Tendulkar and Hardik Pandya in a special list. The trio has scored fifty-plus runs and taken four wickets in an away ODI. The all-rounder, along with Hardik and Yuvraj Singh, is one of the three Indians to score a fifty and take four wickets in ODIs vs England.
It was a welcome return to form for the Gujarat-based cricketer who had been under the cosh after below-par returns in the T20I format. He showed great maturity and composure to take the team out of trouble and provided a calming presence in the middle.
At one stage, the visitors were cruising with skipper Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer batting well. Gill had to walk off the field after suffering an injury while batting on 80, while Iyer was soon run out for 35. KL Rahul was also out for one run. In the end, there weren’t many hiccups as the visitors coasted to a win with 28 balls left to play.
