Axar Patel, Washington Sundar lead India to a 6-wicket win after Shubman Gill’s injury in ENG vs IND 1st ODI

India were in trouble after captain Shubman Gill retired hurt because of cramps. His departure led to the fall of two quick wickets, with Shreyas Iyer (35 off 53) and KL Rahul (1) returning to the dressing room. England had their tails up, but two all-rounders, Washington Sundar and Axar Patel, not only kept the Men in Blue in the game but also took the team to a 6-wicket win over the host nation.

Chasing 259, the sub-continent reached the target in 45.2 overs.

Axar amassed an unbeaten 57 runs in 52 deliveries, including 5 boundaries and 1 six. On the other hand, Sundar managed 52 not out in 63 balls, laced with 4 fours and 1 maximum. The two added an unbeaten 102 runs for the fifh wicket.

Earlier, the situation was under control when Gill was in the middle along with Iyer. The two added 101 runs for the third wicket to put the English team on the foot. However, Shubman started experiencing cramps midway through his innings and left the field in the 26th over.

He accumulated a 75-ball 80, with the help of 11 fours and 1 six.

Rohit Sharma (11 off 21) and Virat Kohli ( 5 off 6) were not able to set the stage on fire.

For England, Curran, Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue picked up one wicket each.

Harry Brook won the toss and decided to put runs on the board. His decision looked all right when Ben Duckett (43 off 45) and Jacob Bethell (14 off 13) stitched a 61-run stand for the first wicket. However, the dismissal of Bethell was enough for India to take four quick wickets. Duckett, Brook (1), Jos Buttler (5), and Curran (0) had no answer to the brilliance of the Indian bowlers.

England’s veteran Joe Root didn’t give up, and his partnerships with Will Jacks and Liam Dawson took the hosts over the 250-run mark.

Root remained unbeaten on 76 runs off 76 balls, and he smashed 6 fours and 1 six. He and Jacks were involved in a 27-run stand, which stopped the fall of wickets. The big moment came when Dawson joined Root, with the two adding 121 runs for the seventh wicket. Dawson scored 68 runs in 83 balls, packed with 6 fours and 1 maximum. England were dismissed for 258 in 47.5 overs, with Axar Patel claiming four wickets.

Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna picked up two scalps each while Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube took 1 wicket each, respectively.
