Delhi: Amidst the recent changes in the Indian T20 team, the decision to drop star wicketkeeper batsman Sanju Samson from the team has remained a topic of discussion. In Geostar’s program ‘Googlies’, former Indian wicketkeeper batsman Parthiv Patel gave his clear opinion on this decision and talked about many aspects of the selection process.

Emotional decision or cricketing logic?

Parthiv Patel says that Sanju Samson’s career has been affected due to unstable performance for a long time. He told that Sanju played brilliant innings on many occasions, but was not successful in maintaining the same level of performance continuously. This aspect holds the most importance at the time of selection.

According to him, giving a chance to Vaibhav Suryavanshi can be considered the right decision from the emotional point of view, but if seen only on the basis of performance and consistency, then it is natural to raise questions on the exclusion of Sanju Samson.

He believes that it is not easy to strike a balance between emotions and logic in selection.

Perception changes about a player who is out of the team

Parthiv Patel said that it is often seen in Indian cricket that people start considering the player who is out of the team as a better option. Giving an example, he said that sometimes there is a demand to include Shreyas Iyer in the team, and sometimes discussion starts regarding Rajat Patidar. In recent times, there were calls to give a chance to Vaibhav Suryavanshi, but as soon as he got a place in the team, a debate started on keeping Sanju Samson out.

He said that there is no dearth of talent in Indian cricket. In such a situation, after every defeat, a perception is formed that the player sitting outside could have perhaps performed better. This is why the decisions of the selectors remain a subject of constant discussion and debate.

Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy received praise

Parthiv Patel also praised the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. He says that the identity of a captain is not determined only by winning trophies, but by how he takes the team forward.

He said that Shreyas Iyer has built a strong image for himself while leading different teams in the last few years.
