Delhi: West Indies cricket team has suffered a double loss after the test match played against Sri Lanka in Antigua. Actually, ICC has imposed a fine of 10 percent of the match fee on the West Indies team due to slow over-rate. Along with this, the team has also suffered a major setback in the ICC World Test Championship points table and 2 points have been deducted.
ICC Elite Panel match referee Javagal Srinath has imposed this fine on the West Indies team. After taking into account time and other allowances, it was found that the West Indies team was 2 overs short of its target in the stipulated time.
According to Rule 2.22 (which deals with slow over-rate) of the ICC Code of Conduct for players and support staff, a team is fined 5 per cent of its match fee per over for fewer overs bowled in the stipulated time. According to the rules, this fine can be only up to a maximum of 50 percent.
West Indies team was 2 overs behind, hence they were fined 10 percent.West Indies captain Roston Chase admitted his mistake and accepted the proposed punishment, thus eliminating the need for a formal hearing. On-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Ahsan Raza, third umpire Sharafuddaula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Deaton Butler had leveled these charges on the West Indies team.
In addition to the penalty, in accordance with ICC World Test Championship Playing Conditions Rule 16.11.2, a team is deducted one point per over by the number of overs it is behind the scheduled time.
Due to this rule, 2 World Test Championship points have been deducted from West Indies’ account. Even after this deduction, the West Indies team remains at eighth position in the WTC standings, but due to the deduction of 2 points, their PCT has now reduced to only 15 percent.
