Delhi: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice President Rajeev Shukla has openly supported the team management for young batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi not getting a chance to make his international debut yet. He says that the 15-year-old talented player has extraordinary ability and the team management will definitely include him in the playing eleven of the Indian team when the right time comes.

Shukla also clarified that the final decision rests with the captain and head coach, hence it is not appropriate to create unnecessary controversy on this issue.

Despite excellent performance in IPL, the wait continues

Vaibhav Suryavanshi caught everyone’s attention with his explosive batting in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. He scored 776 runs in the entire tournament and batted at a record strike rate of 237.30, earning a place in the Indian team for the first time. Despite this, he has not yet got the opportunity to debut in international cricket.

He could not be a part of the playing eleven even in the T20 series against Ireland and the rain-affected first T20 match against England.

Management does not want to change the team composition

The Indian team management believes that there is no need to make changes in the combination which won the team the 2026 T20 World Cup title. For this reason, trust has been maintained on the top-order trio of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan. The team believes that Vaibhav Suryavanshi should wait patiently for his chance.

‘Captain and coach will take the decision according to the circumstances’

Rajiv Shukla said that Vaibhav Suryavanshi is a very talented player and he has proved this with his performance in the IPL.

He said that the criticism being leveled on the team management and coaching staff is not fair, because it is the captain and the head coach who assess the situations and decide when which player should be given a chance. According to him, when the team feels that the right time has come, then Vaibhav will definitely get the opportunity to make his debut in international cricket.

Called criticism regarding selection unnecessary

BCCI Vice President termed the comments being made on the selection process as unnecessary.

He said that only the people present inside the dressing room understand the team’s needs and circumstances best, hence decisions like giving opportunities to players should be left to the team management only.
