Delhi: The journey of the Indian women’s team in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 being played in England ended even before the semi-finals. After this performance of the team, former Indian captain Diana Edulji has raised serious questions on the functioning of the players, captain and coaching staff. He believes that now the time has come for the team management to plan for the future and give a chance to new leadership in T20 cricket.
Diana Edulji said that Harmanpreet Kaur has been an important player of the team for a long time and she has always supported her, but now there is a need to prepare a new captain in the T20 format. According to him, Harmanpreet can remain a part of the team as a player, but the captaincy should be handed over to a player who can take the team forward with new strategies and different thinking.
The former Indian captain says that winning one big tournament is not enough. If the team has to be continuously successful then the selectors and the board should not shy away from taking difficult decisions. He admitted that some people may find it premature to make changes immediately after the World Cup, but considering the future, this is the most appropriate time.
He also said that if bold decisions can be taken regarding big players and captains in men’s cricket, then the same approach should be adopted in women’s cricket.
Diana Edulji also commented on the batting style of Harmanpreet Kaur. He says that an experienced batsman should play with his natural aggressive game. There is no use of defensive batting if the team is losing. Aggressive play at least has the possibility of changing the course of the match.
The former captain also expressed dissatisfaction with the working of head coach Amol Majumdar. He said that the team does not seem to be getting any new benefit from the current coaching system. According to him, players need a coach who inspires them to perform better with discipline and challenges their instincts.
Diana believes that players should realize that in case of poor performance, other players are ready to take their place. Only then will healthy competition arise within the team.
