Australia emerged victorious against India at Lord's Cricket Ground in London on Sunday, June 28. Sophie Molineux's women reached the semi-final alongside South Africa, with India being eliminated.
Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss and opted to bat first on Sunday. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma added 66 runs in nine overs before the latter was dismissed for a 26-ball 34. Smriti didn't show much intent with the bat and was eventually run-out for 38 off 37 deliveries.
Jemimah Rodrigues also played a painstaking knock and was eventually retired out in the last over to bring Richa Ghosh into the middle. However, the Indian team should have taken that call at least a couple of overs before they did. Harmanpreet Kaur played a gem of an innings, amassing 56 runs off 27 balls. Her blitzkrieg at the end, including three sixes in the last over, helped India get to a fighting score of 170/4.
In reply, Renuka Singh dismissed Georgia Voll on the second ball of the innings. However, Beth Mooney and Phoebe Litchfield steadied the ship with a 50-run partnership off 40 balls.
India, however, bounced back strongly by dismissing the two set batters in quick succession. However, this brought Ellyse Perry and Ashleigh Gardner to the crease, who took their time to settle in before going berserk. The required run rate had exceeded 10.50 at the halfway stage. However, Perry and Gardner cut loose and decimated the Indian bowling. They forged a 100-run stand off 57 balls.
Perry departed for 56 when only three runs were needed for a win. Gardner and Georgia Wareham took Australia home with six wickets and an over to spare.
There were doubts regarding Harmanpreet Kaur's strike rate heading into this contest. However, the Indian captain silenced her doubters by smashing 56 off 27 balls. She belted six fours and three sixes in her stellar knock. All three of her sixes came in the final over, bowled by her opposite number.
Lucy Hamilton didn't pick up a single wicket in the contest, but what she did superbly was bowl tight lines inside the power play and keep the Indian batters in check. In her three-over spell, she gave away just 17 runs.
Records Broken and Major Milestones AchievedEllyse Perry won the Player of the Match award for her calm and composed display of batting under pressure.
She scored 56 off 38 balls, hitting eight elegant boundaries. Perry was particularly impressive against the spinners, not allowing them to settle down with her clever use of the feet. When is the next match?Australia will take on the West Indies in the first semi-final in London on Tuesday, June 30. India, however, will be heading home after being eliminated.
