In a bizarre turn of events, former Australian all-rounder James Hopes takes charge of the Big Bash League (BBL) outfit Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls, less than two months after he was named head coach of Sydney Sixers.

Hopes was named coach of the Sixers on May 4, replacing Greg Shipperd, penning a two-year deal. However, when his domestic outfit in Queensland called, the offer was too good to turn down. The 47-year-old made his First-Class debut with the Bulls during the 2001-02 season and went on to represent them till 2016. He captained the side to the Sheffield Shield title in 2012 and consecutive one-day trophies in 2012-13 and 2013-14.

He also played 30 times for the Brisbane Heat, spanning five seasons, taking 24 wickets and scoring 256 runs.

Hopes appreciated the Sixers for considering him for the head coach position, whilst also giving reasons to leave them to join the Queensland outfits.

"I wrestled with this decision as I was, and still am, very appreciative of being offered the Sixers role earlier this year. However, to have the opportunity to take on the head coaching program with Queensland and live in Brisbane again was too good to miss. I have been in and out of Queensland Cricket since I was 14 and along the way was privileged to play for the Bulls and the Heat.

So, to be a part of that again is something very special to me and my family," James Hopes said

In response to Hopes' u-turn, the Sixers also put out a statement, wishing him all the best for his stint with the Brisbane-based outfit.

"While the Club is disappointed by this decision, we understand the significance of this opportunity for him and his family, and we wish him all the very best. The Sydney Sixers were impressed by the calibre of coaches who applied for the role, and we look forward to progressing with the appointment of our new BBL Head Coach," the Sydney Sixers statement read.

As things stand, Hopes forms part of the Washington Freedom's backroom team in Major League Cricket. He also served as the bowling coach for the Punjab Kings during the 2026 Indian Premier League.
