Former India pacer Shikha Pandey believes India's opening duo of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma will face their sternest test yet when they take on South Africa in a crucial Group A clash at the Women's T20 World Cup 2026.

"India's opening pair has given us many strong starts, but they will face their toughest challenge against this South African attack," Pandey said on JioStar.

She singled out Shabnim Ismail and Marizanne Kapp as the biggest threats. "Ismail has made a strong comeback and is bowling with genuine pace. Kapp, who has already taken three wickets against Pakistan, is bowling with great control. Both will test the openers with swing, seam, and bounce." Pandey also noted Ayabonga Khaka's ability to move the ball away from right-handers, adding another layer of difficulty.

On Mandhana's approach, Pandey warned she must be selective. "Smriti has been dismissed in the past, trying to drive away from her body, often caught in the slips. She will need to be disciplined against the moving ball."

Pandey is also excited about the battle between Ismail and Verma. "Shafali loves a challenge, and Ismail is not afraid to use the bouncer. It will be a spicy contest."

Praising Mandhana's evolution, Pandey said the vice-captain has transformed into a complete T20 batter. "She has worked extensively on her power-hitting, and we saw that in the WPL final. She is now accessing deep square leg, using the sweep, and has a plan B over covers. Her back-foot play has always been strong, but adding power has made her dominant on both sides of the wicket. She's no longer just a touch player; she's now a complete T20 batter."
