India kept their hopes of reaching the semi-final alive with a comfortable five-wicket win against Bangladesh at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Thursday, June 25.
Nigar Sultana won the toss on Thursday and opted to bat first. India picked up an early wicket as Dilara Akter was dismissed by Renuka Singh. Juairiya Ferdous and Sobhana Mostary stitched a 51-run stand to take their team into a solid position.
Mostary was dismissed for 22 in the 13th over. At the end of the 16th over, Bangladesh reached 106 with seven wickets still left in the bank.
However, India prevented their neighbours from finishing off strongly. The last four overs for Bangladesh yielded just 30 and five wickets.Bangladesh finished on 136/8 in 20 overs, on a good wicket to bat on. In reply, Smriti Mandhana was dismissed for eight, but Shafali Verma took the Bangladesh bowlers to the cleaners from the other end. The youngster was eventually dismissed for 53 off 34 balls in the ninth over. Yastika Bhatia got herself a start but couldn't convert it into a substantial score.
Richa Ghosh was promoted to No. 4, but she could only make 10 runs.Jemimah Rodrigues played an enterprising cameo of 26 runs off 15 balls before Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma took India home in 16.5 overs.
Best Batting Performance of the Match: Shafali VermaShafali Verma showed positive intent from the first over itself, hitting Marufa Akter for two glorious boundaries. She went from strength to strength and made the most of the field restrictions inside the power play. During her 53-run knock off 34 balls, she hit eight fours and one six.
Radha Yadav was the pick of the bowlers for India. The spin-bowling all-rounder picked up the crucial wickets of Sobhana Mostary and Nigar Sultana through the middle overs and finished her spell by dismissing Ritu Moni in the 19th over. Yadav finished with figures of 3/28 in four overs.
Shafali Verma won the Player of the Match for her exhilarating knock. The conditions were good for batting, and Shafali made the most of it. She hit three fours and one six in the first two overs and put the Bangladesh bowlers under pressure from the word go.
Bangladesh will finish their campaign on Sunday, June 28, when they take on South Africa. Meanwhile, India will face Australia later that day in what could be a virtual quarter-final.
