Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) Director of Cricket Mo Bopat has dropped a bombshell, revealing Devdutt Padikkal as RCB’s potential future captaincy option. Currently, Rajat Patidar is leading the franchise, who has led RCB to two consecutive IPL titles.
Padikkalwas one of RCB’s standout performers as the Bengaluru-based side clinched its second consecutive IPL trophy under the leadership of Rajat Patidar.Batting at No. 3, the left-hander amassed 464 runs in 15 innings at an impressive strike rate of 168.73.
His aggressive approach complemented the explosive starts provided by openers Virat Kohli and Phil Salt, helping RCB maintain momentum through the powerplay and middle overs. Padikkal’s performances have not only strengthened his position in the batting lineup but have also earned him praise from the franchise management.
RCB Director of Cricket Mo Bobat was full of appreciation for the 25-year-old, highlighting both his impact with the bat and his leadership qualities.Bobat revealed how the team wanted Padikkal to adopt a more attacking role and credited him for embracing the challenge.
“We wanted him to really push the boundaries of his intent, and to really deliver an impact. We had Salty (Salt) and Virat going pretty hard at the top, and we wanted Dev (Padikkal) to continue that momentum when he came to the crease. And to his credit, he’s totally bought into that and embraced that. And he’s batted very selflessly, and I think that’s huge credit to Dev,” Bobat said in RCB's documentary series RCB’s Trophy Quest.
The RCB official further went a step ahead and hinted that Padikkal could emerge as a leadership candidate for the franchise in the future.
“I’ve also been really impressed with him as a character. I think he’s very leaderful, actually. I think he’s a potential captain of the future,” Bobat further added.
While Rajat Patidar has guided RCB to unprecedented success with back-to-back IPL titles, Padikkal’s rapid development has made him one of the franchise’s most valuable long-term assets. Having already spent multiple seasons with the Bengaluru outfit and being a local talent, the left-hander is viewed as someone who understands the culture and identity of the team.
