Delhi: The troubles of the England cricket team are continuously increasing before the second test match. Fast bowler Ollie Robinson has been ruled out of the match against New Zealand at The Oval due to pain and stiffness in his right knee. Earlier, captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson are also unavailable as both are facing investigation over an incident that took place in a London nightclub.
This news is also a big blow for Ollie Robinson personally. He returned to the Test team after almost two years and performed brilliantly in the first match. The experienced fast bowler had taken a total of seven wickets in the match and made an impact by sending three batsmen to the pavilion in his very first over.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has said that Robinson will remain with the team and his recovery will be continuously monitored. It is expected that he can return fit by the third Test starting from June 25 at Trent Bridge. On the other hand, after the exclusion of Ben Stokes, Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson, a big challenge has arisen before the selectors regarding the team combination.
It is considered certain that new players will get a chance in place of Atkinson and Robinson in the fast bowling department. The return of star fast bowler Joffra Archer seems almost certain. He could not play the first Test due to his participation in the Indian Premier League (IPL), but on Sunday he practiced with the team at The Oval.
In the absence of Ben Stokes, England has many options. The team can include Jordan Cox or James Ryu in the final eleven as additional batsmen. In such a situation, England can go with four main bowlers.
If this strategy is adopted then the chances of two players out of Matthew Fisher, Sonny Baker and Henry Crocombe getting a chance will increase. On the other hand, to maintain team balance, the option of an all-rounder like Rihan Ahmed can also be considered, so that both the batting and bowling departments can be strengthened.
Another concern for England is regarding wicketkeeper batsman Jamie Smith. His wife is going to give birth to another child soon. Although the team management is hopeful that Smith will be available for the second Test, he may be allowed to stay with his family if necessary.
If Smith is not available then both Jordan Cox and James Ryu can make place in the team. Cox has recently strengthened his claim by scoring a double century in county cricket.
