Virat Kohli paid tribute to Kane Williamson after the New Zealand legend announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing the curtain down on one of the most impressive careers. Former India skipper took to social media to congratulate his friend and long-term rival Williamson, hailing his records on the field and the bond they have built over the course of their careers. Kohli’s statement reflected the respect the two cricketers have for each other. They contributed across departments and won several matches for their teams.
“From an opponent to a friend over the years. It’s been a pleasure watching you bat and compete against you over so many years, but more than that, I value our friendship and shared perspectives on the game and beyond,” Kohli wrote.
The right-handed batter also wished Williamson for the next chapter of his life.
“I continue to cherish every time we speak or meet. Wishing you nothing but the best always brother. You’ve done your bit, you deserve to enjoy all of it now and put your feet up. Well done mate, life’s only just begun.”
Both players became big names at the same time and crossed paths in youth tournaments, international cricket and the Indian Premier League. While they were competitors on the field, their rivalry developed into a friendship built on respect and admiration.
Williamson and Kohli were part of the Fab Four, alongside England’s Joe Root and Australia’s Steve Smith. The quartet dominated batting charts across the globe, with each setting new milestones.
Kohli had contrasting styles but showed similar consistency, earning the respect of fans and cricket experts.
Williamson was hailed by teammates and rivals for his batting. He represented New Zealand in 110 Tests, amassing 9,515 runs at an average of 54.06. He hit 33 Test centuries and 38 half-centuries, with the highest score of 251 against the West Indies in Hamilton in 2020.
In 175 one-day internationals, he posted 7,256 runs, including 15 centuries. He played 93 T20Is, amassing 2,575 runs.
While his numbers reflect his greatness, the tributes from his peers offer the true indication of Williamson’s stature in the game. As he closes his chapter in international cricket, the New Zealand cricketer departed with respect from the cricket community.
