Bangladesh skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz suffered a concussion and was hospitalised following a blow to the head while batting in Bangladesh’s five-wicket victory over Australia in the second ODI on Thursday, June 11.

The all-rounder was hit on the side of his helmet by a Nathan Ellis bouncer while attempting a pull shot during Bangladesh's chase. The incident occurred in the 34th over and saw Mehidy be assessed by team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan after dropping to his knees following the blow. A stretcher was brought onto the ground along with extra medical staff as a precaution.

The Australian team doctor also rushed out after the incident.

The skipper chose to continue batting, despite the treatment and vomited during the same. He scored an unbeaten 22 as the Tigers sealed the chase to bag a maiden series win over the Aussies. He was taken to the hospital after the game, where he was to be assessed.

"Mehidy Hasan Miraz had a concussion during the match today. He continued to play after being assessed in the middle. We have sent him to the hospital to assess the rest of his signs and for general observation. He will be there for the next 24 hours," Bangladesh team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan said after the game, as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

Team officials stated to the press that Mehidy’s condition was stable, but he would remain under observation. Vice-captain Najmul Hossain Shanto took over during the post-match presentation ceremony in his absence.

Speaking of the game, Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman reduced Australia to 0 for 3 in the opening overs, before Australia recovered courtesy of a 103-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Marnus Labuschagne and Xavier Bartlett.

The pair notched up half-centuries, which took Australia to 187 for 8 in a rain-inflicted 42-over innings. Chasing a revised target of 192 in 41 overs, Bangladesh rode on the back of valuable contributions from Shanto, Soumya Sarkar and Towhid Hridoy as they reached the target in just 35 overs.

The third and final ODI of the series will be played in Dhaka on Sunday, June 14.
