Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has said that he is not only a limited-overs specialist but can play red-ball cricket. He opened up on his readiness to play Test cricket. Despite setting the stage on fire in T20 cricket, the southpaw insisted that his game is suited to the longest format of the game.

The 15-year-old has become the talk of the town, shattering records in the Indian Premier League 2026.

His performance for the Rajasthan Royals helped him in breaking into the Indian National Cricket Team for the tours of Ireland, England and the Asian Games.

Former captain and legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar wants to Vaibhav in the traditional five-day format.

Speaking to Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder, Sooryavanshi addressed the discussion on his future in red-ball cricket.

“A lot of people have been asking and discussing whether I want to be a part of red-ball cricket. I have already practiced a lot with the red ball and continue to do so.

I have played red-ball cricket for my state, and I enjoy it,” he said.

The youngster mentioned that his attacking batting style in the T20 format shouldn’t be taken as his batting philosophy, stating that he can adapt to the demands of every format.

“I want to play red-ball cricket as I train for it. The T20 format demands aggressive batting, and that’s the reason I go for my shots. When I play red-ball cricket, I change my batting style to adapt to the requirements. In the ODIs, I will adjust accordingly. My dream is to play all formats of the game. The rest is in God’s hands.”

Some of cricket’s biggest names have been urging the Indian Cricket Board to develop the teenager as a red-ball cricketer.

Ravichandran Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujara and  Dale Steyn have spoken about his potential in the longest format.

His growth has been rapid. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Bihar at 12 years during the 2023-24 season.

Since then, he has been breaking records. His breakthrough moment came against Australia Under-19 in Chennai in 2024, where he amassed a 100 off 58 balls, the fastest hundred by an Indian in Youth Tests and the second fastest in history.

The batter then struck a century against Australia Under-19 in 2025, becoming the first cricketer to hit two tons in Youth Test history in under 100 deliveries before 15 years of age.

His consistency across formats and the IPL convinced selectors that he is a special talent. He is likely to make his debut in Ireland and will also play a key role against England.

The call-up to the India team has put him within touching distance of becoming the youngest-ever Indian cricketer to represent the country in international cricket.

While Sooryavanshi’s exploits in white-ball formats have made him one of the stars to watch out for, his red-ball record suggests that he can dominate the bowlers in Test cricket.

Before becoming a renowned name in IPL, he had already carved a niche for himself in first-class cricket. His two centuries against Australia Under-19 convinced experts that he can take on the bowlers in the multi-day format.

Sooryavanshi’s record in red-ball cricket

  • 104 off 62 vs Australia U-19 in 2024: He recorded the fastest ton by an Indian batter in Youth Tests and the second fastest overall.
  • 113 off 86 vs Australia U-19 in 2025: His knock helped India in securing their biggest-ever win in Youth Test history Down Under.
  • He is the first cricketer to strike two centuries under 100 deliveries in Youth Test history before turning 15.
  • Vaibhav made his debut for Bihar at the age of 12.

He has a talent to score runs in all formats, and that is why former cricketers are calling him a future star. Pujara has spoken in his support as far as red-ball cricket is concerned, while the likes of Ashwin and Steyn feel he can become one of the ambassadors of the game if he continues to play red-ball cricket.

For now, he is getting ready to play for India in three T20I assignments. If his words are to be believed, he has a dream of playing for the country in whites.
