The Lucknow Super Giants had one more successive dismal season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, finishing dead last in the points table, with just four wins from 14 matches, racking up only eight points under Rishabh Pant's captaincy.

The franchise, despite boasting a solid Indian bowling attack, was found lacking in all departments. Their squad often looked incomplete, with a glaring lack of options in the bowling department and the batting lineup. While the mini-auction has not been a place for significant change, LSG will need to make significant alterations to their approach and combinations to better their results in the 2027 season.

Here are 3 changes Lucknow Super Giants can make for IPL 2027: 3. Incorporate reliable all-rounders

A common theme for LSG has been their consistent lack of extra options in the batting and bowling departments. Seven batters and five bowlers without extra options in either have been a detriment to them in the 2025 and 2026 seasons. The lack of options calls for the inclusion of a reliable all-rounder who offers solid contributions with bat and ball.

With Mitchell Marsh playing as a pure batter and Aiden Markram not being called upon as often with the ball, the need for someone who can contribute heavily with either bat or ball and can be handy with the other would help them alter their options and build their team combinations with much-needed balance.

2. Rethink overseas combinations Nicholas Pooran and Mitch Marsh (Source: IPL)

At one point in their season, the Super Giants saw their team combinations include four overseas players, Josh Inglis, Nicholas Pooran, Marsh and Markram, who were batters that played in their top five. Since 2025, the team has seen a heavy reliance on a batting core filled with overseas stars, with a reliance on Indian names for bowling depth and lower middle-order options.

Teams that dominate the IPL have seen their playing XIs packed with overseas players who fulfil different roles and offer different skillsets, allowing for better team structure. LSG’s one-dimensionality with their foreign combinations has been a severe detriment, and adding international players who offer different skillsets would add much-needed balance and help freshen up the side.

1. Add more depth and experience in the middle order Rishabh Pant (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI)

One glaring hole that the Super Giants have faced is a lack of experienced names in the middle order. Rishabh Pant’s insistence to bat in the top order left the middle order glaring, with young names like Mukul Choudhary, Abdul Samad, and Himmat Singh having to shoulder more responsibility. The use of Markram at number 5 did not change their fortunes, with the Protea batter favouring batting at the top of the order.

This calls for a significant injection of experience into the Super Giants’ middle order. A reliable name with runs under their belt would provide the much-needed stability to the batting unit and would provide a platform to be able to build around after fast starts from the top order.
