Just three months after India won their third T20 World Cup title, Suryakumar Yadav is set to be removed from the T20I captaincy and is highly unlikely to find a place in the squad.
With the conclusion of IPL, the side will be resuming the international duties, which were packed with back-to-back fixtures against Ireland and England starting in the latter half of this month.
With the selection committee set to make the squad announcement, it is reported that the current captain, Suryakumar Yadav, will be sacked from his role after a sharp dip in his batting performance.
The selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar will convene in Mumbai to pick the squads for the T20I series against Ireland and England, aiming to build the squad for the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, which are scheduled in September.
The BCCI is set to consult with team management, and the selection committee will appoint a new captain for the new cycle.
“The selection committee, BCCI and team management, in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir, have decided that India should go with a new skipper from here on.
Under Surya’s captaincy, the team did win the T20 World Cup, but keeping his form and future in mind, they felt it’s time to move on,” said a top BCCI official.“He won’t be considered for selection, and the decision will be conveyed to Surya soon.”
Suryakumar Yadav’s form with the bat has been a big concern and have failed to make contributions over the last two years, including the 2026 IPL season.
Despite scoring a fifty against the Rajasthan Royals, Suryakumar Yadav amassed 270 runs in 13 innings with an average of 20.76 this season.
Despite leading the Indian side to the third T20 World Cup title in March, Suryakumar Yadav’s batting form has been under scrutiny. He was handed the India T20I captaincy after Rohit Sharma retired from the format after India’s T20 World Cup title win in 2024.
