Delhi Capitals (DC) once again showed promise in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026season but failed to convert their potential into a playoff berth. The franchise finished sixth on the points table with seven wins from 14 matches, continuing a trend of inconsistency that has plagued them in recent years.

While the squad possesses quality players and a solid core, a few key changes could help the Delhi-based franchise emerge as genuine title contenders in IPL 2027, as they are still seeking their maiden title in the tournament despite making it to the playoffs on multiple occasions in the past.

Here are 3 changes DC should make ahead of IPL 2027: 3. Strengthen the finishing department Ashutosh-Sharma. (Photo source: X/IPL)

One of Delhi's biggest shortcomings this season was the lack of reliable finishers in the lower middle order. While Ashutosh Sharmaimpressed whenever he got an opportunity, he was often underutilised and did not receive enough deliveries to showcase his power-hitting ability. Despite maintaining a strike rate of over 150 in most appearances, he was rarely given the platform to influence games consistently.

DC should continue backing Ashutosh while adding another proven finisher who can complement him. Modern T20 cricket demands explosive batting in the final five overs, and teams with strong finishers often gain a decisive advantage in close contests. Strengthening this area would allow Delhi to maximise scoring opportunities and chase targets more effectively.

2. Add an aggressive opening batter Prithvi Shaw (Photo Source: prithvishaw/Instagram)

Delhi's opening combination lacked the attacking intent required in the powerplay.

KL Rahul provided stability and often anchored the innings, but his partners, including Abishek Porel and Pathum Nissanka, also preferred a measured approach. As a result, DC frequently missed the chance to dominate opposition bowlers in the first six overs.

The franchise should consider bringing back Prithvi Shawas an opening option. At his best, Shaw is one of the most aggressive batters in Indian cricket and has the ability to put bowlers under immediate pressure. His fearless stroke play can help Delhi achieve faster starts and create momentum that benefits the middle order.

An attacking opener alongside Rahul could provide the balance that the batting lineup currently lacks.

1. Reassess captaincy role Axar Patel (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL)

Another area DC must evaluate is leadership. Axar Patel's captaincy did not consistently produce the desired results, and at times his own performances appeared affected by the additional responsibility. Several bowling changes and field placements failed to make a significant impact during crucial moments of the season.

The franchise should consider appointing KL Rahul as captain. Rahul brings extensive IPL and international leadership experience and could provide greater tactical clarity. Tristan Stubbs is another long-term option, having gained leadership experience in franchise cricket. A fresh captaincy approach may help Delhi unlock the full potential of their squad and build a stronger foundation for IPL 2027.
