Playing under Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Pathirana has emerged as one of the best bowlers in the world. He could not play the entire season of IPL 2024. But now he has created a sensation in the Lanka Premier League (LPL).

He was bought by Colombo Strikers for US$120,000 in the Lanka Premier League (LPL 2024 Auction). Along with this, he has become the most expensive player in the history of LPL.

Prior to Pathirana, the record was held by Dilshan Madhushanka, who was bought by Jaffna Kings for $92,000 i.e. Rs 76.6 lakh in the LPL 2023 auction.

Pathirana made his Lankan Premier League debut for Colombo Strikers last season. But he was released before the 2024 auction. Now in the LPL auction 2024, Colombo have bought him for $120,000 under the Right to Match process. Converting it to Indian currency, the price of Pathirana is 99 lakh 90 thousand rupees.

At the same time, a bid of Rs 3.59 crore has been placed on Pathirana in Sri Lankan currency. The base price of Pathirana was 50 thousand US dollars. Dambulla Thunders and Galle Marvels also bid for him, but none could beat Colombo Strikers' bid of $120,000.

Apart from Mathisha Pathirana, Colombo Strikers have bought Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed for US$50,000. Afghanistan player Rahmanullah Gurbad is also in this team. International stars Chamika Karunaratne, Thisara Perera, Sadira Samarawickrama, Nipun Dhananjay, Shadab Khan and Glenn Phillips are also included in the squad.

As for Pathirana, his price in LPL is five times higher than IPL, as he gets Rs 20 lakh to play for CSK.
