Delhi: In the current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)’s mysterious spinner Varun Chakraborty continued to take the field for the team despite battling injuries. Captain Ajinkya Rahane revealed that despite having a hairline fracture in the left toe, the decision to feed Varun was taken only after the approval of the medical team.

Varun remained on the field despite injury

Varun Chakraborty was injured during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) this month. Batsman Ishan Kishan’s direct shot hit his shoe, after which a fracture was found in his toe. The special thing was that this was his third fracture injury this season. Even before this, he had continued playing despite injuries to two fingers of his non-bowling hand.

Decision taken after advice of medical team

Ajinkya Rahane said while talking to the media that the fitness and injury management of the player is completely a matter of the medical staff.

He told that there were continuous talks between the physio team of Kolkata Knight Riders, the Center of Excellence of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the medical staff of the Indian team.

Rahane said that his focus is only on whether the player is mentally ready to play or not and how big is the risk. The medical team believed that Varun’s injury would not be more serious than playing.

Varun’s stubbornness boosted the morale of the team

Rahane praised Varun Chakraborty and said that his passion to play despite being in pain shows his commitment towards the team.

According to Rahane, Varun himself was keen to play continuously and gave a clear message to the team that he was ready to take the field.

However, when the pain increased, he was given rest for a match, but after that he expressed his desire to play again. Rahane said that when a player himself comes forward to play, it gives positive energy to the entire team and support staff.

It is noteworthy that Varun Chakraborty is among the centrally contracted players of the Indian team.

In such a situation, there was constant coordination between Kolkata Knight Riders and BCCI regarding his injury. Under the rules, the franchise has to inform the board about the fitness and medical condition of such players, so that the injury does not become more serious.
