Royal Challengers Bengaluru enter IPL 2026 Qualifier 1 with a familiar advantage and a slightly mixed mood. Rajat Patidar’s defending champions finished the league stage on top with nine wins from 14 matches, but only by Net Run Rate, as Gujarat Titans also ended with 18 points.
Bengaluru arrive in Dharamshala after a heavy 55-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad, while GT come in high on confidence after thrashing Chennai Super Kings by 89 runs. The stakes are simple: the winner of RCB vs GT goes straight to the IPL 2026 final, while the loser gets a second chance in Qualifier 2. For Bengaluru, this will be their fourth appearance in Qualifier 1, and history gives them a decent amount of comfort.
RCB have played Qualifier 1 three times in IPL history before the 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans. They have won twice and lost once.
Qualifier 1 matches played: 3, Won: 2, Lost: 1
RCB’s Qualifier 1 Results:
vs Chennai Super Kings, IPL 2011: Lost by 6 wickets
vs Gujarat Lions, IPL 2016: Won by 4 wickets
vs Punjab Kings, IPL 2025: Won by 8 wickets
The format gives the top two teams a major advantage. Even if a side loses Qualifier 1, it does not get eliminated immediately. The loser drops into Qualifier 2, where it faces the winner of the Eliminator for another shot at reaching the final.
That safety net has helped Bengaluru before. In 2011, they lost Qualifier 1 to CSK but still reached the final by beating Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2. However, they eventually lost the title clash to Chennai.
1. RCB first played Qualifier 1 in IPL 2011 against Chennai Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. Bengaluru had finished as the top-ranked league side, with Chris Gayle dominating the season and winning the Orange Cap. Batting first, Bengaluru posted 175/4 in 20 overs. Virat Kohli was the standout performer with an unbeaten 70 off 44 balls, hitting five fours and three sixes.
RCB had CSK in trouble early at 7/2, but Suresh Raina changed the match with a brilliant 73 off 50 balls. His counterattack helped Chennai chase the target with two balls to spare and win by six wickets.
2. Bengaluru returned to Qualifier 1 in IPL 2016 against Gujarat Lions at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. After bowling Gujarat out for 158, thanks largely to Shane Watson’s four-wicket spell, Bengaluru’s chase began disastrously. They collapsed to 29/5 inside the powerplay.
Then AB de Villiers produced one of the great IPL playoff innings. He scored an unbeaten 79 off 47 balls and found crucial support from Iqbal Abdulla, who made 33 not out off 25 balls. Their unbeaten 91-run partnership took RCB to a dramatic four-wicket win with 10 balls left.
3. RCB’s third Qualifier 1 appearance came in IPL 2025 against Punjab Kings. That time, Bengaluru dominated and won by eight wickets, booking their place in the final. They later completed their long-awaited dream by winning the IPL 2025 title under Rajat Patidar’s captaincy.
RCB’s Qualifier 1 record is positive, but the Gujarat Titans challenge is serious. Both teams finished with identical win-loss records in the league stage, and only RCB’s superior Net Run Rate separated them at the top.
RCB have the experience of winning big playoff moments, especially after their title run in 2025. But momentum is currently with Gujarat, who arrived after a dominant win over CSK. RCB, on the other hand, need to respond quickly after the defeat to SRH.
The match will be played at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on May 26. The winner will move directly to the IPL 2026 final in Ahmedabad on May 31. The loser will travel to New Chandigarh for Qualifier 2 on May 29. RCB’s history in Qualifier 1 says they know how to handle this stage. Now, against GT, they need to prove it again.
