Delhi: In the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) star fast bowler Mohammed Shami has made a big record in his name. In the match played against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at Ekana Stadium, Shami made a new record in IPL history by taking a wicket on the very first ball of the innings. He achieved this special feat by leaving England’s fast bowler Joffra Archer behind.
As soon as Punjab Kings’ innings started, Mohammed Shami gave a great start to Lucknow by dismissing opener Priyansh Arya on his first ball. With this, Shami became the bowler who took the wicket on the first ball of the innings the maximum number of times in the IPL. He did this feat for the sixth time, whereas Joffra Archer has done it five times.
In terms of taking a wicket on the first ball of the innings in IPL, Trent Boult, Lasith Malinga, Pat Cummins, Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Praveen Kumar and Ashok Dinda have achieved this feat thrice each.
Mohammed Shami dodged Punjab’s young batsman Priyansh Arya with a sharp bouncer. The batsman looked completely uncomfortable with the bounce of the ball and he gave an easy catch towards midwicket. There Arjun Tendulkar completed the catch without making any mistake. This wicket put pressure on Punjab at the very beginning of the match.
Shami did not stop here.
He also increased the problems of Punjab Kings by dismissing Cooper Connolly cheaply in his next over. Connolly was playing after scoring 18 runs in 10 balls, but was bowled by Shami’s brilliant ball. At that time Punjab’s score was just two wickets for 22 runs.Despite his excellent performance in the IPL, Mohammed Shami was not included in the Indian team for the only Test match between India and Afghanistan. The experienced fast bowler has been away from the selectors’ attention since the ICC Champions Trophy last year.
It is noteworthy that despite performing well for Bengal in domestic cricket and making a consistent impact in the IPL, Shami did not get a chance in the Test and ODI team for the Afghanistan series. This decision of the selectors has surprised even the cricket fans.
