Mumbai Indians are already out of the IPL 2026 playoff race, but their match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens still carries plenty of intrigue. MI are trying to avoid another bottom-place finish, KKR are fighting to stay alive, and the five-time champions finally have two of their biggest names available again.
Hardik Pandya has missed the last three matches because of back spasms, while Suryakumar Yadav sat out the previous game against Punjab Kings due to personal reasons after the birth of his daughter.
For a side that has spent most of the season changing combinations, this is less about playoffs and more about pride, planning and who still belongs in the 2027 blueprint.Hardik Pandya is expected to return against KKR after training at full intensity in Kolkata. He bowled at full tilt and batted fluently during MI’s practice session on May 19, which strongly suggests that the back issue has eased enough for him to be considered. Shardul Thakur had earlier said, ‘He is now in Mumbai training. I am expecting him to return to action in Kolkata and play the game.’
Hardik last played on May 2 against CSK at Chepauk, where he bowled two overs and scored 18 off 23 balls. He then missed the LSG game at Wankhede, traveled to Raipur for the RCB match but did not play, and skipped the Dharamshala fixture against PBKS. That made it three missed games across 17 days.
Suryakumar Yadav is also available again. He had led MI in Hardik’s absence for two matches before missing the PBKS game due to personal reasons. Jasprit Bumrah captained Mumbai in Dharamshala, making MI one of the rare teams to use three captains in a season.
Hardik’s return also brings the captaincy question back. MI are eliminated, but whether Hardik immediately resumes leadership or the franchise continues testing alternatives is still a talking point. Given he is the official captain, the likeliest outcome is that he leads again.
Mumbai’s best XI should bring back both Hardik and Suryakumar while retaining the players who have actually delivered in a poor season. Ryan Rickelton has been MI’s standout batter, crossing 400 runs at an average above 40 and strike rate above 180.
He has repeatedly given attacking starts with Rohit Sharma and looks like a long-term overseas investment.Suryakumar should return at No. 3, followed by Naman Dhir and Tilak Varma. Tilak has found form recently and was the hero of the chase against PBKS with a brilliant 75*. Hardik can slot in at No. 6, with Will Jacks giving them another all-round batting option.
In the bowling unit, Corbin Bosch and Deepak Chahar have done enough to continue. Jasprit Bumrah’s season has been unusually quiet, with only three wickets in 12 innings, and he will want to finish better.
Allah Ghazanfar could return as the second spin option at Eden Gardens, where spinners often get help. Raj Bawa, who had replaced Hardik during his absence, has been ruled out of the rest of the season due to injury.MI best predicted XI vs KKR: Ryan Rickelton (wk), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Naman Dhir, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya (c), Will Jacks, Corbin Bosch, Deepak Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, AM Ghazanfar.
Impact Player options: Raghu Sharma, Shardul Thakur, Rohit Sharma, if managed as Impact due to niggle, Ashwani Kumar, Robin Minz.
If MI want an extra spinner, Raghu Sharma can be used as the Impact Player. If they want more seam-bowling depth, Shardul Thakur is the better option. If Rohit is being managed physically, Mumbai could also start with an extra bowler and bring him in as Impact while batting.
The points table no longer offers MI anything meaningful, but the match still matters. Mumbai have beaten KKR in 25 of their 36 IPL meetings, including a successful chase of 221 earlier this season. They have also won two of their last three matches, even if the late improvement has arrived too late to save the campaign.
For KKR, this is a must-win playoff game. For MI, it is a chance to test their best available combination, give Hardik another match after injury, and assess who fits next season’s rebuild. Hardik’s own form has been poor: 146 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 136.44 and only four wickets at an economy close to 12. A strong finish would not fix his season, but it would quiet some of the noise around his fitness and future.
Suryakumar also has two games to finish better before India’s T20I cycle resumes. Bumrah, too, has personal motivation, having taken at least 15 wickets in every IPL season from 2016 to 2025, but only three so far this year.
So the big update is clear: Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are both available for MI vs KKR today. Mumbai’s playoff race is over, but the Eden Gardens match could still shape their leadership, combinations and confidence before a major off-season review
