Ravindra Jadeja’s absence from both India squads for the Afghanistan series has become one of the biggest talking points from the selection meeting in Guwahati. The Ajit Agarkar-led committee named India’s squad for the one-off Test and three ODIs on Tuesday, but the veteran all-rounder was missing from both lists.
Jadeja, who has played 89 Tests and 210 ODIs, was part of India’s last Test XI against South Africa in November 2025 and also featured in the ODI series against New Zealand earlier this year. His omission naturally raised questions, especially because Axar Patel, another left-arm spin all-rounder, was also left out.
But Agarkar made it clear that this is not a door-closing decision. The selectors have rested Jadeja from the Test and want to assess other ODI options with the 2027 World Cup in mind.
Ajit Agarkar clarified that Jadeja is still firmly part of India’s plans, especially in Test cricket. The chairman of selectors said Jadeja has been rested from the one-off Test against Afghanistan, rather than dropped.
‘He is still an integral part of the team.’ Agarkar told reporters during the virtual interaction after the squad announcement. Agarkar went further while explaining Jadeja’s Test status, saying, ‘With regards to Test, he still remains No. 1 spinner.
That is an important line. India are not moving away from Jadeja in red-ball cricket. The Afghanistan Test, starting June 6 in Mullanpur, is not part of the World Test Championship cycle, which gives selectors room to manage senior players. Jadeja has also been playing IPL 2026 for Rajasthan Royals, and given his all-round workload across formats, rest seems to be the main reason behind his Test absence.
Jadeja’s ODI absence has a slightly different explanation. Agarkar said India want to assess options keeping the 2027 ODI World Cup in mind, especially because the tournament will be played in South African conditions.
‘With regards to ODIs, with 15-16 months left, we want to try and assess what our options are keeping in mind conditions in South Africa are,’ Agarkar said. ‘We know what Jadeja and Axar can do.’
That explains why both Jadeja and Axar Patel are missing from the ODI squad.
India already know what they bring: left-arm spin, lower-order batting, fielding value and experience. The Afghanistan ODI series gives the management a chance to look at different combinations.Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Hardik Pandya and Harsh Dubey have all been picked in the ODI squad, giving India multiple all-round options. Kuldeep Yadav remains the main wrist-spin option, while the pace group includes Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Prince Yadav and Gurnoor Brar.
So Jadeja’s ODI absence is more about exploration than exclusion.
India are trying to widen their World Cup pool before the serious countdown begins.India ODI squad: Shubman Gill (captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vice-captain), KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, Harsh Dubey.
The one-off Test will be played at Mullanpur from June 6. The ODIs will follow on June 14 in Dharamsala, June 17 in Lucknow and June 20 in Chennai.
The bottom line is simple: Jadeja has been rested from the Test and left out of the ODIs because India want to test options for the 2027 World Cup. Agarkar’s comments make it clear this is not a permanent snub. Jadeja is still India’s premier Test spin all-rounder, but for this Afghanistan series, the selectors have chosen rest and experimentation over reputation.
