New Delhi: The Delhi Capitals kept their slim playoff chances alive in IPL 2026 after defeating Rajasthan Royals in a crucial league match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, strengthening their position in a tightly contested points table.
Led by Axar Patel Delhi Capitals chased down a target of 194 with five wickets in hand and four balls remaining, registering back-to-back wins at a critical stage of the tournament.
Despite the victory, DC remain seventh on the table with 12 points and must rely on multiple favourable results in other fixtures to stay in the race for the playoffs.
Delhi Capitals showed improved form in their recent matches, securing consecutive wins against playoff-contending teams.
After defeating Punjab Kings earlier in the week, DC followed it up with a confident chase against Rajasthan Royals, highlighting a late surge in form.
The team successfully chased 193/8, with the batting unit stepping up under pressure in the final overs.
However, their position in the standings means qualification is still dependent on results beyond their control.
DC now face a do-or-die situation in their final league match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.
A win is essential for keeping their playoff hopes alive, while a loss or even a washout will eliminate them from contention.
The match is scheduled to be their final league fixture of the season, making it one of the most crucial games of their campaign.
Even if Delhi Capitals defeat KKR, their qualification depends on several other results falling in their favour.
They will need KKR to lose their match against Mumbai Indians, while also hoping that Lucknow Super Giants beat Punjab Kings.
In addition, DC will require both Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings to either lose key matches or finish with inferior net run rates.
If RR and CSK lose all remaining matches, DC could qualify without needing to depend on net run rate calculations, provided all other conditions are met.
In a tightly packed mid-table battle, net run rate (NRR) could play a decisive role in determining the final playoff spots.
Delhi Capitals must ensure that even in victory, they maintain a strong margin to stay ahead of rivals like Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings.
Cricket analysts note that DC’s earlier losses have significantly impacted their NRR, making their qualification path more complicated.
Despite the late resurgence, DC are no longer in contention for a top-two finish, which would have guaranteed a place in Qualifier 1.
Their focus is now solely on securing a place in the playoffs and extending their campaign.
The team’s inconsistent performance earlier in the season has left them dependent on other results at this stage.
Delhi Capitals’ win over Rajasthan Royals has kept their IPL 2026 campaign alive, but their path to the playoffs remains highly complicated. With one match left and multiple scenarios to depend on, Axar Patel’s side must not only win but also hope for a favourable set of results elsewhere to extend their season.
